The carbon data download returns emissions. This results in some activities which Emitwise does not include emissions for not being present in the carbon data download.
The carbon data download returns 1 row per emission calculated by our system. This can mean that for 1 row of activity data uploaded, there are multiple rows in the carbon data download. For example if you upload a record for the purchasing of steel, there would be one record estimating the emissions of producing that steel, and one record estimating the emissions of transporting that steel from where it was produced to your facility.
This also means that any activities for which Emitwise does not calculate any emissions, will not show in the carbon data download. For example if you upload a row from your spend data relating to real-estate taxes, the system would automatically exclude this, and it would not show in the carbon data download.
This works in our system through two different methods:
1. Automatically excluded activities.Activities where the primary product being purchased or consumed does not represent any emissions according to Emitwise’s methodology. Examples of these are:
- Real-estate taxes
- Employee insurance
- Accounting adjustments)
This is where customers can define exclusion rules which are bespoke to the customer. These can be very bespoke, but are typically associated with the following types:
- Exclusions due to reporting boundaries
- Exclusions to avoid double counting
- Exclusions for internal transactions
