As a small business, what's the minimum data we actually need to get started with emissions reporting?

Understand the essential spend data needed to begin your emissions journey

Emissions reporting is simpler than most small businesses expect. You don't need complex environmental measurements - just your basic business spending records.

The core data you need is already in your accounting system:

  • Rent payments (which often include utilities if you pay a rental provider)
  • Fuel expenses for any business vehicles
  • Business travel costs
  • Major supplier purchases
  • Operational expenses

Most of this information can be found directly in your accounting software like QuickBooks or Xero, or in your annual financial statements. If you pay utilities separately from rent, you'll include those too - but many businesses can simply report their rent payments, which cover their share of building utilities.

Remember: Start with your largest expenses first. These typically account for the majority of your emissions and are the easiest to track.
