By setting a Science-Aligned target, you can track progress and show customers that you’re committed to decarbonization.
Introduction
A science-aligned target helps you reduce your emissions in line with global climate goals (e.g., 1.5°C). By setting a baseline year and a future target year, you can track progress and show customers that you’re committed to decarbonization.
Step-by-Step Guide
-
Navigate to Decarbonization Information
- Go to your Profile and switch to the Decarbonization Information section.
-
Locate the “Targets” Tile
- If this is your first target, the tile will appear empty.
- Click Set a New Target to open the side panel labeled Set a Target.
-
Select Baseline Year
- Choose the year (from the dropdown) you want to use as your baseline.
- Only years for which you have emissions data in Emitwise will appear.
-
Set Target Year and Term
- Pick the future year by which you plan to achieve the reduction.
- The system automatically labels it as near term or long term based on how far out it is.
-
Choose Target Ambition
- Options include: 1.5°C, Well Below 2°C, or Other (Not SBTi-Aligned).
-
Select Target Method Type
- Options are:
- Absolute or Sector Specific
- Supplier Engagement
- Options are:
-
Include Scope 1 & 2 Categories
- Steps 3 and 4 of the wizard ask you which categories of Scope 1 and Scope 2 you want in the target.
- Tick the boxes as needed.
-
Specify Emission Reduction Percentage
- A slider (0–100%) or numeric input sets how much you aim to cut emissions from the baseline to the target year.
- The system may display messages like “SBTi Aligned” if your chosen reduction meets certain thresholds.
-
Submit Your Target
- Click Submit to save. Emitwise confirms creation of your science-aligned target.
Common Issues/Tips
- Tip: If your reduction percentage is too low, Emitwise may label it “Not SBTi Aligned.” Try increasing it to align with recognized science-based trajectories.
- Pitfall: Ensure your baseline year is correct; you can only choose from years you’ve input data for.
Conclusion
You’ve successfully created a science-aligned target, providing a clear emissions-reduction roadmap. Next, track your progress or consider adding existing targets if you already have formal commitments in place.
