How are indirect emissions from electricity consumption calculated?

Based on electricity consumption and emission factors

Indirect emissions are calculated by multiplying the amount of electricity consumed in the production of CBAM goods by an appropriate emission factor.

  • By default, this factor is based on the average carbon intensity of the electricity grid in the country of production.
  • However, if certain conditions are met (such as a direct connection to a specific power plant or a power purchase agreement), a more specific emission factor can be used.

The European Commission provides default emission factors for electricity, which are updated periodically.
