It’s unclear whether I should be uploading all activity or purchase data to Emitwise or only activity or purchase data that is relevant to my customer.

You should be uploading all activity or purchase data.

Disaggregating activity or purchase data to provide only emissions, activity or purchase data that is relevant to one specific Client is a very complex exercise (both time consuming and requires a lot of skill - domain and data handling expertise).

While this is ultimately what your Client is hoping to get from you; it would be naive to imagine that each of their suppliers would be able to provide this data without a huge investment of time and resource. Particularly given that we know that roughly 80% of any one Customers’ suppliers is likely to only just be starting their decarbonisation journey and is unlikely to have measured their Scope 3 emissions.

For this reason, Emitwise partners with your Client to overcome this data challenge; and Emitwise and your Client sees the challenge of getting to this level of granularity as a data journey.

It is entirely possible to do this and at this level of granularity if you wish to; by engaging with Emitwise directly beyond the free emissions calculation opportunity provided to you by your Customer.

Instead, Emitwise collects data from you that helps to apportion emissions in their supply chain with some degree of certainty. For example, Emitwise will know how much your Customer spends with you in a given year. In understanding your total revenue for that year; we are able to calculate how much your customers spend with you (the Supplier) is as a % of your total revenue. Once Emitwise has calculated your emissions, they are able to calculate an Emissions Factor for you based on the intensity of emissions per [unit of currency] of spend.

The benefit to you is that you don’t need to spend time disaggregating your data; and in doing so, possibly making some mistakes or excluding data that might actually be relevant to your Customer. Additionally, you are able to use the data calculated by Emitwise to report your emissions to other Customers that may be asking what your emissions are.

As your organisation’s ability to measure, report and reduce emissions matures, you might be able to start to understand what emissions are for a specific Client. However, this takes a lot more time, and is far more complex which is why your Customer has turned to Emitwise, purposefully starting simple and anticipating that it’s a data journey.
