In our latest sustainability update, we’re helping customers and suppliers align their emissions targets more closely with science-based standards.
We know our customers want the ability to understand if their suppliers are setting SBTs aligned with SBTi Criteria, but they do not believe that their suppliers have the budget to set and have their targets validated by the SBTi; and therefore need cost-free validation.
In their Profile, suppliers can create a target. They are guided to pick a term and ambition that match the SBTi criteria:
- Aligned with SBTi criteria Target Guidance: For a near-term Aligned with SBTi criteria target, choose a target year that is 5 to 10 years from your baseline year. For a long-term target, the target year should be 2050 or earlier.
- Scope 1 & 2 Aligned with SBTi criteria Target Guidance: You should set a minimum target of 4.2% linear annual reduction for Scope 1 and 2 emissions AND your boundary (coverage or emissions inventory) should > 95% to align with a 1.5°C science-based near-term goal or >90% for a long-term goal. Consult the provided sector-specific guidance in the Supplier Academy to determine the appropriate pathways for setting long-term Scope 1 and 2 targets specific to your sector.
- Scope 3 Aligned with SBTi criteria Target Guidance: Set a minimum target of 2.6% linear annual reduction for Scope 3 emissions to align with a well-below 2°C near-term goal. For long-term targets, consult the sector-specific guidance in the Supplier Academy to determine appropriate pathways. Generally, a 90% reduction is expected for long-term Scope 3 targets, though this may vary by sector.
Emitwise then review the target data coverage and properties and mark it as "Aligned" with SBT where relevant, allowing the supplier's score to move to Silver.
