Using Emitwise templates

1. File Upload

  • Click "Upload files" in the Data Collection dashboard
  • Select the activity type and facilities the data applies to
  • Choose your completed template file
  • Click the "Submit" button

2. Sheet Selection

  • In the new window, choose the relevant data sheet from your Excel file
  • Even with single-sheet files, sheet selection is required
  • Click "Continue" to proceed

3. Header verification

  • Confirm the top row shown contains your column headers
  • These headers will be used to map data to the Emitwise structure
  • Click "Continue" when verified

4. Column Mapping

The system will attempt to automatically map your columns to Emitwise's data structure. You may need to:

  • Review automatic mappings for accuracy
  • Add missing mappings manually
  • Match specific fields like units (e.g., "megawatthour")
  • Link facility names from your data to Emitwise facility names
  • Click "Confirm" once all mappings are complete

5. Final Review and Submission

Before final submission:

  • Check the "Error rows" counter
  • A count of "0" indicates no issues
  • If errors exist:
    • Click "Error rows (x)" to view problematic data
    • Review error messages for guidance
    • Make necessary corrections
  • Click submit when all errors are resolved

Using non-templated data

1. Ensuring necessary data is in the file

  • In order to be able to process data, Emitwise requires that uploaded electricity data meets at least the following criteria:
    • Is tabular with columns designating different meta data aspects (e.g. date, facility, etc.), and rows designating individual data entry line items.
    • Includes the required information for the activity type you are uploading. To understand what information is mandatory, see our article Mandatory and optional fields by data type.

  • Click "Upload files" in the Data Collection dashboard
  • Select the activity type and facilities the data applies to
  • Choose your completed template file
  • Click the "Submit" button

4. Header Review and Column Mapping

The system will help you match your data columns to Emitwise's structure.

Tips for mapping:

  • Review all automatic mappings for accuracy
  • Not all columns need mapping - optional data can remain unmapped
  • Double-check mappings for mandatory columns
  • Contact Emitwise support if a required facility is missing
  • Click "Confirm" when mapping is complete

5. Data Review and Validation

Before final submission:

  • Review the templated data in Emitwise format it has been mapped to
  • Check for any error notifications

A. If no errors ("Error rows (0)"):

  • Review column headers against input data
  • Scroll through all columns to verify data
  • Click "Complete Import" to finish

B. If errors exist:

  • Click "Error rows" to view problematic data
  • Address errors either:
    • In the original file (recommended for multiple errors)
    • Directly in the platform interface (for single errors)
  • Once resolved, review the complete dataset
  • Click "Complete Import" to finish
