A framework for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions.
The GHG Protocol is the global standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It breaks down emissions into three categories, known as scopes:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from company operations, such as fuel combustion.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, and steam.
- Scope 3: Indirect emissions from a company’s supply chain, including purchased goods and services, transportation, and product use after sale.
The GHG Protocol provides the foundation for sustainability reporting frameworks, such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and enables companies to track and report their emissions in a consistent, transparent way.
For more details on the different scopes and their significance, see: Understanding Scope 3 Emissions.
