Using key metrics to manage supplier performance

This guide walks you through the Analyze > Suppliers Overview page in Emitwise and explains how to leverage key metrics and visualizations to gain a clear picture of your suppliers’ sustainability performance.

Introduction

This guide walks you through the Analyze > Suppliers Overview page in Emitwise and explains how to leverage key metrics and visualizations to gain a clear picture of your suppliers’ sustainability performance. You’ll learn about the four main metrics, how to apply filters, and how to interpret the data table to drive effective supplier engagement.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Navigate to the Suppliers Overview

    • Go to Analyze / Suppliers Overview.

  2. Explore the Four Key Metrics (Top Section)

    • Engaged Emissions (%): Shows the share of your total emissions from suppliers you’ve actively engaged.
    • First-Time Emissions Calculations: Indicates how many suppliers have calculated their emissions for the first time using Emitwise.
    • Emissions Aligned with Science-Aligned Targets (%): Reflects the portion of your emissions under suppliers who have set science-aligned targets.
    • Emissions Decrease from Supplier-Specific Data: Highlights the percentage reduction in your total emissions achieved by using supplier-specific data instead of industry averages.
  3. Apply Global Filters (Affects All Sections)

    • Filter Button: Opens a modal where you can filter suppliers by various properties (e.g., industries, spend categories, owners).

    • Time Range Selector: Lets you narrow data to a specific reporting period (e.g., last year, last two years).

Tip: This is useful to focus on your most recent or relevant suppliers.

  4. Review the Visualizations (Second Section)

Five key charts show a breakdown of your emissions (or spend or supplier count) based on different supplier attributes:

    • Total Emissions: Overview of your selected scope’s total emissions.
    • Emissions from Suppliers Reporting Data: Differentiates emissions covered by direct supplier data vs. publicly reported data or no data.
    • Emissions by Supplier SPT Status: Groups emissions by whether suppliers have a science-aligned target, committed to one, or not set a target.
    • Emissions by Carbon Maturity: Highlights suppliers’ emissions measurement progress (Scope 1 only, Scope 1 & 2, or Scope 1, 2 & 3).
    • Emissions by Supplier Initiatives: Reflects how many suppliers have disclosed active decarbonization initiatives.

Note: You can toggle each visualization to see data by Emissions, Spend, or Number of Suppliers. By default, it shows Emissions.

  5. Examine the Underlying Data (Third Section)

    • Scroll down to the data table, which lists all suppliers matching your filters and time range.
    • Key columns include:
      • Decarbonization Score (Insufficient, Starter, Bronze, Silver, Gold)
      • Carbon Maturity (e.g., Does Not Measure, Measures Scope 1 & 2, etc.)
      • Target (e.g., No Target, Committed, Science-Aligned)
      • Decarbonization Initiatives (Number of initiatives or “None”)
      • Company Emission Factor (Intensity based on total emissions and revenue)
      • Data Quality (Highlights any quality issues with supplier data)
    • Use the search bar or any filter to focus on specific suppliers or groups.

Common Issues/Tips

  • Tip: If you see incomplete data, check the Data Collection Status or Data Quality column for possible issues.
  • Issue: Can’t find a recent supplier? Make sure your time range includes the period when you last purchased from them.

Conclusion
